Liverpool’s Transfer Focus Turns to Outgoings Before Final Additions

As Liverpool prepare for the final stretch of the summer transfer window, the club’s strategy is entering a more measured, tactical phase. According to David Lynch, speaking to Dave Davis on Anfield Index, Liverpool’s business is far from done, but the next steps depend heavily on outgoings.

Arne Slot’s squad has already been bolstered by key additions, including Jeremie Frimpong for £29 million, Florian Wirtz for a record-breaking £116 million, Milos Kerkez for £40 million and Freddie Woodman on a free. Despite those high-profile signings, further ‘significant incomings’ are expected once the current logjam is eased.

“Yeah, 100%. I think there’s a focus now on opening up some space,” Lynch stated. “For example, we have three left-backs so they need to sell one without a doubt.”

That left-back trio, Kerkez, Andy Robertson and Kostas Tsimikas, is too heavy for a squad challenging across four fronts. One will go, and that decision could be pivotal in determining what type of player is added next.

Squad Evolution Still Underway

There is an expectation that Darwin Nunez will depart, and that will inevitably lead to a forward being brought in. Though Nunez never fully cemented a starting spot under either Klopp or Slot, his exit creates a clear hole in the depth chart.

“Look at Darwin Nunez leaving, you will have to fill his place in the squad. I know he wasn’t the first choice striker but the idea would be to get someone to come in and bring the forward line up again,” Lynch added.

Florian Wirtz, though an elite-level signing, is not necessarily a direct replacement for Nunez or Harvey Elliott, who also appears set for an exit in search of regular football.

“Harvey Elliott will move on. Is Florian Wirtz his replacement in the squad? Or is Wirtz seen as a false-nine or a left-winger?”

There is a growing sense that Wirtz’s versatility may be part of the plan, but it will not stop Liverpool from making further attacking moves if space becomes available.

Departures Key to Incoming Activity

The club is clearly planning for squad fluidity. Slot may have lifted the Premier League title in his debut season, but the real challenge lies in maintaining that level. That requires a delicate balance of trimming and reinforcing, without breaking the rhythm of a winning side.

“There’s going to be spots opening up. There’s potential for more players to leave who might want more minutes elsewhere and when they do, they will also need replacing.”

Names like Andy Robertson, Federico Chiesa and even Joe Gomez have been mentioned in wider discussions, though Liverpool are not expected to force any sales. Instead, the club is prepared to act swiftly if the right opportunity opens up on both exits and signings.

Busy Weeks Ahead at Kirkby

The message from within is clear — Liverpool are ready to act. The business so far has been ambitious and well-planned, but it is far from over.

“It’s exciting and interesting. A lot can still happen in the next few weeks.”

With less than a month to go in the window, there is a strong belief that Liverpool’s squad for the 2025-26 season still has one or two key changes left in store. Fans should expect movement, particularly if further exits are sanctioned.
