Liverpool are reportedly among several English clubs showing an interest in a highly coveted Scandinavian starlet who’s earned comparisons with Arsenal captain Martin Odegaard.

In recent years, the Reds have shown a happy knack for procuring some of the brightest young prospect in British football, snapping up the likes of Kaide Gordon, Ben Gannon-Doak, Fabio Carvalho, Trey Nyoni and Rio Ngumoha.

It now appears that they have their sights set on winning the race for a much sought-after teenage gem from the continent.

Liverpool ‘firmly in the race’ for Eirik Granaas

According to a report for TEAMtalk, Liverpool, Chelsea and Newcastle are all ‘firmly in the race’ for Eirik Granaas, a midfielder for Norwegian club Fredrikstad FK who turned 16 just last month, with Real Madrid and Bayern Munich also believed to be interested.

Despite that tender youth, he’s already made 13 appearances at senior level and played in a Europa League qualifier last summer, although he didn’t feature in his team’s Conference League qualifier against Crystal Palace in August 2025.

As a midfielder who broke into senior football in his mid-teens, he’s earned comparisons with Odegaard, who he supplanted as the youngest player in Norwegian top-flight history last year.

Granaas has been backed to go ‘as far as he wants’

Granaas was born in March 2010 (just let that birthdate sink in!), which would’ve made him four months old when Roy Hodgson became Liverpool manager and just 15 months old when Jordan Henderson signed for the Reds.

Fredrikstad teammate Simen Rafn has hailed his ‘fantastic ability’ and mentality, predicting that he ‘will be at the top’ in years to come and, with the right attitude, ‘can get as far as he wants’ in the sport (VG Sporten).

While Odegaard is now captain of the Premier League leaders, he joined Real Madrid at 16 but struggled to break into the first team and was repeatedly dispatched on loan, so that experience might serve as a cautionary tale for Granaas when deciding his next move.

As mentioned by TEAMtalk, FIFA prohibits international transfers for players under the age of 18, so even if Liverpool were to sign him this year, he wouldn’t officially complete a move to Merseyside until March 2028 at the earliest.

Even at that, he’d probably be eased into the first-team setup at Anfield rather than brought in to make an immediate impact, and the experience he’d gain from playing at senior level in Norway for another couple of years would be invaluable.

Granaas certainly seems like a hugely prodigious talent, and whenever it happens, his next move will be fascinating to see.
