Liverpool forward Sophie Roman Haug has sustained an Anterior Cruciate Ligament (ACL) injury.

The Reds confirmed the news via a post on their official club website this afternoon.

The 26-year-old Norwegian international attacker sustained the injury during the club’s Subway Women’s League Cup group stage fixture against Durham at Maiden Castle last week. Haug started the match for Liverpool but she had to be replaced by teammate Ceri Holland just 21 minutes into the contest.

Haug’s injury has now been assessed by the Liverpool medical team and it has been confirmed that the player has ruptured her Anterior Cruciate Ligament (ACL). She will require surgery before beginning the rehabilitation process.

Haug is the second Liverpool player to sustain an Anterior Cruciate Ligament (ACL) injury this season with midfielder Marie Höbinger having suffered the same setback.

Commenting on Haug’s injury, Liverpool boss Gareth Taylor said “Of course this is the news we didn’t want to hear for Sophie and we are all hugely disappointed for her.

“It’s a really tough blow following on from the similar news about Marie [Höbinger] last week.

“The main thing is making sure Sophie has the best of care and everyone at Melwood will be right behind her as she begins her journey back to fitness.”

Haug will be sidelined for the remainder of the season.
