Liverpool have a golden opportunity to sign a sensational midfielder. It's one they shouldn't pass up.
The Telegraph reports that Newcastle United are struggling financially right now. It's something that's dogged them for the last few years, even if they found a way around the Premier League concerns by essentially selling their stadium to themselves.
That's a tactic that doesn't work for European competitions, however, and they're set to run afoul of UEFA regulations. It's something that, per the report, should spark a massive sale this summer.
Eyes will be on Anthony Gordon - a long-time Liverpool target who they tried to sign in 2024. Now they've got another chance, with Newcastle entertaining £100m bids.
But he's not the only player the Reds should eye. Sandro Tonali is another who could apparently leave and someone who may be exactly what Liverpool need at the base of their midfield.
We know the Reds want someone to progress the ball back there given they attempted to sign Martin Zubimendi. An alternative was never signed but Tonali really could be the one.
He's a natural at progressing the ball, while also offering plenty going forward in and around the box. Arguably, he's the perfect hybrid midfielder for this Liverpool system.
And he's available, above all. An opportunity we're not sure Liverpool can afford to miss.
Midfield Performance and Newcastle Role
Sandro Tonali has established himself as the rhythmic heart of Newcastle United’s midfield during the 2025–2026 campaign. Known for his calm precision and ability to control matches from deep, the 25-year-old has recorded a pass accuracy of 84% and provided 24 key passes in Premier League action this season. Manager Eddie Howe has relied on Tonali to provide structure and defensive stability, often tasking him with winning second balls and closing passing lanes. Despite his consistent individual metrics, Newcastle has struggled as a collective, currently sitting 12th in the table and trailing the top four by 12 points with seven games remaining.
Injury Concerns and Transfer Speculation
Tonali recently faced a minor setback after being forced off with a hip injury during Newcastle’s 7–2 defeat to Barcelona in the Champions League. Although he missed the subsequent Tyne-Wear derby, he recovered quickly to star for Italy in their 2–0 World Cup play-off semi-final win over Northern Ireland, contributing both a goal and an assist. However, his future at St James’ Park is under scrutiny as major clubs, including Manchester City and Manchester United, monitor his situation. While Tonali is under contract until June 2029, reports suggest he may be open to a move if Newcastle fails to secure European football, with the club already identifying Juventus midfielder Khephren Thuram as a potential replacement.
