Liverpool have hijacked Newcastle United’s deal and activated the €40 million release clause to sign Victor Munoz, according to Fabrizio Romano.
The Reds want to bring new wingers through the door at Anfield this summer and have agreed on personal terms with the Spanish forward.
Liverpool moved slyly, gazumping Newcastle, who had been in talks to sign Munoz for weeks.
The 22-year-old caught the eye of clubs like Liverpool and Newcastle after delivering seven goals and five assists in 36 appearances across all competitions.
His direct dribbling style and relentless running up and down the wing are particularly suited to the Premier League.
The incoming Liverpool man has a low centre of gravity, a quick burst and a powerful physique that helps him get past opponents.
Combine that with a vicious shot, and he is quite the gem.
Munoz played a key role in helping his side avoid relegation, showing his versatility by also operating on the right wing and as a centre-forward.
However, Munoz’s arrival could have consequences beyond strengthening Andoni Iraola’s squad.
He’d add yet another option on the left flank, where Cody Gakpo already commands plenty of minutes and teenage sensation Rio Ngumoha is waiting for his breakthrough.
At just 17, Ngumoha joined Liverpool, believing they offered the clearest pathway to first-team football, but another signing in his preferred position complicates that route.
While Munoz’s versatility allows him to feature across the frontline, he would still represent another obstacle in a fiercely competitive attack.
If opportunities become increasingly scarce, Liverpool may find themselves facing an uncomfortable dilemma.
A player as highly rated as Ngumoha will not want to spend crucial developmental years watching from the sidelines.
Rival clubs would undoubtedly be ready to tempt him away from the Merseyside club with promises of regular senior football.
