Liverpool open contract talks with key trio amid summer uncertainty

As Liverpool push towards the conclusion of a defining campaign, attention is already shifting behind the scenes to what comes next. According to Football Insider, the club have now opened contract talks with three high-profile players: Ibrahima Konate, Luis Diaz and Diogo Jota.

Following new agreements with Mohamed Salah and Virgil van Dijk, the focus has turned to securing the next wave of talent – or, in some cases, deciding when to let go.

Konate attracting European giants

Football Insider reports that Real Madrid are “very interested” in Ibrahima Konate, with Paris Saint-Germain also keeping tabs on the 25-year-old. The Frenchman is viewed internally as a core part of the project under Arne Slot, but with his contract running until 2026, Liverpool won’t be rushed into agreeing unfavourable terms. If an extension cannot be agreed, “Liverpool plan to keep Konate at the club, but will be prepared to let him leave.”

With potential successors like Marc Guehi and Dean Huijsen already being monitored, Liverpool are preparing for all eventualities.

Uncertainty over Jota and Diaz continues

Both Luis Diaz and Diogo Jota have been linked with exits in recent months. While Diaz has caught the eye of Barcelona, Jota is reportedly on the radar of several Saudi Pro League clubs.

“Initial talks over the offer of a new contract had failed,” Football Insider confirmed. Diaz’s situation remains fluid, and new negotiations are set to be held in the coming weeks. Jota’s persistent injury issues have also played a role in delaying progress, with the Reds now said to be “leaning towards his exit” if a breakthrough is not achieved.

Squad planning under Slot gathers pace

Arne Slot’s vision for the squad is becoming clearer, with contract renewals now forming a key pillar of the summer strategy. While there’s optimism that Diaz and Konate may yet extend their stays, Jota’s long-term future appears more fragile.

Our View – Anfield Index Analysis

This latest update from Football Insider feels like another stark reminder that big changes are coming at Anfield. While refreshing the squad is important, the idea of losing players like Konate or Diaz raises serious questions.

Letting Jota go might make sense financially – his injury record is frustrating, no doubt – but when he’s fit, he’s been lethal. Selling him to Saudi feels like a short-term decision for long-term risk, especially with our attacking depth always walking a tightrope.

Konate’s case is more baffling. At 25, he’s still got his best years ahead. Yes, he’s not been flawless this season, but the potential is obvious. If we can’t get him to commit, it feels more like an issue of negotiation, not ability. To even consider letting him go when clubs like Madrid are circling? That’s dangerous territory.

Diaz is trickier. Flashes of brilliance, sure, but is he a consistent top-tier starter? Perhaps not yet. But do you sell him to fund another wide forward – and risk the same inconsistency?

These talks might just define Slot’s first season. It’s not just about contracts; it’s about identity. Who are we building around – and who are we ready to lose?
