Liverpool are chasing a genuinely world-class footballer. The €17m figure is genuinely extraordinary, though.
Liverpool will enter the market for a centre-back in 2026. Well, re-enter it.
The Reds tried to sign Marc Guehi to end the summer transfer window, only for Crystal Palace to end any deal right at the last minute. A potential agreement was there, a medical was done - Liverpool just needed a final 'yes' from the Eagles.
They didn't get it and now they're short at the back. Giovanni Leoni's knee injury limits them to three centre-backs this season - a situation they'll surely try to rectify in January.
Especially as Joe Gomez's future is incredibly uncertain and Ibrahima Konate's contract expires next summer. The big question, though, is whether Liverpool try to sign Guehi again.

It's now a very complicated one as non-English sides can offer him a pre-contract from January 1st. Reports suggest a line of top clubs will do just that.
Liverpool, then, must consider other options. One on their list is certainly available.
Bild reports that Liverpool are very much in the mix for Dayot Upamecano. Like Konate, his contract expires at the end of the season and again like his compatriot, talks over a new deal are a struggle.
It has the Reds hoping Bayern Munich need to let him go, with the likes of Real Madrid, Paris Saint-Germain and Manchester United also in the running. A lot of demand, then - which explains his demands.
The report says Bayern have essentially agreed a new wage for Upamecano. The issue is his signing bonus.
