The end is near for Arne Slot, and a club legend is ready to come in his place.
It's a sad time to be a Liverpool fan right now. Things were not supposed to end in such an ugly way for Slot. He was supposed to be the Bob Paisley to Jurgen Klopp's Bill Shankly, not Brendan Rodgers 2.0.
Slot had shown so much promise in his first season, only for him to completely fall to pieces in his second campaign.
The signs were coming. The parties in Ibiza, linking up with Wayne Lineker, Liverpool winning just 50% of their games last year, and less than 50% in the last 12 months.
Behind those glorious times in April and May, and then the summer, the underlying issues were bubbling under the surface.
Slot has now completely lost grip on this team. The way he set-up against Paris Saint Germain, completely contradicting what he supposedly stands for as a manager is proof of that.
If you believe in your own team and your qualities as a coach you don't change your entire system in a Champions League quarter final.
Liverpool's entire performance was abysmal in Paris. There was no redeeming quality to it. Liverpool could not manage a single shot on target. They only managed three in total and kept possession of the ball for just 26% of them game.
The only positive is that Liverpool are still in the tie with 2-0.
If Slot remains in charge though, they stand no hope of going through. Under Slot, Anfield has turned from a fortress into a charity house, giving away points to anyone - including PSV and Nottingham Forest who have both won their comfortably this season.
PSG will batter Liverpool if they keep the same set-up and if Slot is the man to lead his players into battle.
A change needs to happen. These players need a lift, and a club legend confirmed with his comments on Wednesday night that he's ready to come in and replace the Dutchman.
There have been so many question marks over the true quality of Steven Gerrard as a coach. He delivered a league title at Rangers but had pretty unsuccessful spells at Aston Villa and Al Ettifaq.
So, it's fair to ask the question of whether he is ready to step into such a big role at the club.
However, right now Liverpool don't need a tactical genius, they just need someone, even temporarily who can gather this group of players together and inspire them - just as Klopp did.
And someone who understands how to play the Liverpool way, by giving it your all and showing a bit of character.
Gerrard is the perfect person for that job. His comments on TNT Sports after the final whistle in Paris confirmed that.
"Well listen, I agree with Macca, it's going to be a real big ask. And the reason I say that is because PSG are so good," Gerrard said.
"Over the last 90 minutes or so Liverpool have done enough but what they have done is they sort of gave themselves a small opportunity next week at Anfield.
"And I believe the game will look totally different because PSG had it all their way tonight, Liverpool are going to have to throw more punches at them."
Gerrard was then asked whether Liverpool should play with five at the back again.
"Not a chance," he said. "There's no way a back five with them tactics, with that formation goes and gets you three goals at Anfield. I don't think that's the case, you have to be more on the front foot, more bold with your selection and your formation and your tactics."
