Liverpool only managed to escape being the laughing stock of the Premier League last season as Tottenham Hotspur finished in 17th place.

The Anfield outfit were expected to be challenging for the title but, by the end of the term, they were lucky to even qualify for the Champions League.

Of course, the sheer number of injuries that the team suffered won't have helped matters much but, a team of Liverpool's calibre should have more than enough quality among their ranks to qualify for the Champions League each season.

As mentioned, that wasn't the case so, the Reds are going to be forced into making some changes among their ranks with one of their star men potentially about to exit Anfield for one of their Champions League rivals.

Real Madrid have confirmed that they don't want to sign Enzo Fernandez

Liverpool and Real Madrid have created a bit of a rivalry between themselves over the last few years.

Whether it's coming against one another in Champions League finals or signing one another's players, there's always something that has pitted the two teams against each other.

And, since Jose Mourinho has just been hired and has taken Ibrahima Konate away from Liverpool on a free transfer, the rivalry has started to bubble again.

Los Blancos are looking to re-jig their entire squad with several players being thrusted onto the market.

However, with all these sales that they could have lined up, they need to source replacements with their midfield being one of the main areas that they're looking to strengthen.

So, with this in mind it's a tad surprising to see the official statement they just released about not wanting to sign Enzo Fernandez, but, it could end up meaning that Liverpool are in the money.

"In light of the reports and statements that have appeared in recent days regarding an alleged interest from Real Madrid CF in the player Enzo Fernández, the club wishes to state that it has not made any effort, either direct or indirect, to sign the aforementioned player and, likewise, has no intention of undertaking such an operation," they wrote.

"Real Madrid wishes to express its utmost respect for Enzo Fernández, a great footballer whose career and quality are widely known, as well as for Chelsea FC, a club with which it maintains an excellent institutional relationship.

"Precisely because of the respect that an entity like Chelsea FC deserves and because of the principles of institutional loyalty that have always governed the actions of Real Madrid, the club considers it necessary to categorically deny speculations that are unfounded and do not correspond to reality.

"Real Madrid regrets that, despite the clarity of the facts and the lack of any action on the part of the club, information continues to be disseminated that does not correspond to reality and that only contributes to generating confusion among fans and unnecessarily harming the entities and people involved."

Real Madrid not wanting Enzo Fernandez could mean that they want to sign Alexis Mac Allister

The fact that Fernandez wasn't allowed to play for Chelsea during a few games this season after he confessed his desire to join Real Madrid makes this statement feel rather strange.

Most people expected the Argentinian to be on his way to the Bernabeu before the start of the 2026-27 season but, that clearly isn't going to happen now.

And, since a deal for Fernandez has now been ruled out, it could mean that Alexis Mac Allister.

The former Brighton man has long been linked with an Anfield exit with some reports even suggesting that Mourinho has asked Real Madrid's board to bring Mac Allister in.

However, since the rumours have died down recently, a deal for Mac Allister felt like it was off the table but, after this latest development, it could mean that the La Liga outfit now have their eyes firmly set on him.

If we're being honest, it's hard to tell whether this is a good or bad thing for Andoni Iraola and his men as, during the 2026-27 campaign, Mac Allister was terrible but, during the 2026 World Cup, it feels like he's rolled back the years and is back to his best.

A deal worth around £60 million is what Liverpool would want for their "incredible" midfielder and, if Real Madrid put this money up, it kind of feels like it's a deal they need to take it.

That is, especially since the Reds' midfield is one of their main areas that they still need to upgrade.
