Liverpool have parted company with head coach Arne Slot a year after their title. According to L'Équipe, the club made the call on Champions League final day, with Slot to leave at the end of his second season.
Slot was said to have been told on Saturday morning. Andoni Iraola is the leading candidate to take over and could be appointed early next week after taking Bournemouth into the Europa League for the first time.
This second campaign was arduous. Liverpool finished fifth with 60 points, their lowest in 10 years, and suffered 19 defeats in all competitions, scraping Champions League qualification. They lost 0-2 in Paris on eight April then 0-2 at Anfield to go out to PSG in the quarter-finals.
Last summer’s road accident that killed Diogo Jota weighed heavily on the squad. Despite €500m spent on transfers, adaptation issues and injuries bit, and only Ekitike truly convinced.
The football often lacked tempo at Anfield, several senior players struggled, and Mohamed Salah scored only seven league goals after 29 the season before. Steven Gerrard felt the team no longer looked like Liverpool and were often hard to watch. Liverpool had sounded out several coaches since January, suggesting a long deliberation by Fenway Sports Group and director of football Michael Edwards.
