Liverpool are playing favourites, it seems. The Reds have not entered contract talks with a first-team star.
The Times reports that Liverpool have not held contract talks with midfielder Alexis Mac Allister. It's one that raises eyebrows given the recent efforts to boost their midfield options.
Notably, Ryan Gravenberch signed a new contract that ties him to Liverpool for the long-term. The Dutchman is now one of the best-paid players at the club and his deal represented the first step towards solidifying the new midfield.
It's the one area of the team that Liverpool didn't invest in last summer. This summer that's set to change, with the likes of Adam Wharton reportedly wanted.
Is that a sign that he isn't entertaining a new deal? Or is it that Liverpool see him as the most expendable of the three? That Mac Allister would be the sacrifice for incoming stars.
Of course, Curtis Jones also has an uncertain future as he enters the final year of his deal. Right now, it feels like neither he nor the Argentine are a part of the grander plan.
Liverpool Performance and Stats
As of 24 April 2026, Alexis Mac Allister remains a central fixture in the Liverpool midfield, though his second season under Arne Slot has seen a dip in offensive output. The 27-year-old has made 31 Premier League appearances, contributing two goals and two assists across 2,212 minutes. While his defensive work and ball retention remain high—averaging an 86.3% pass completion rate—his average FotMob rating has slipped to 6.87. Across all competitions, he remains the fifth most-used player in the squad, underscoring his reliability despite the team's broader struggles.
Transfer Speculation and Potential Exit
Mac Allister’s future at Anfield is currently the subject of intense speculation. Reports from April 2026 suggest he is considered a "saleable asset" to finance a summer rebuild. Real Madrid have been heavily linked, with intermediaries reportedly discussing his desire to move to Spain. With no contract renewal talks yet held and two years remaining on his deal, Liverpool may listen to offers around £80 million.
The midfielder remains a guaranteed selection for Argentina for the 2026 World Cup this June. Alongside Enzo Fernández, Mac Allister is viewed as a vital component of Lionel Scaloni’s midfield.
