On Saturday lunchtime, Fabrizio Romano delivered the bombshell news that Andy Robertson has emerged as Atletico Madrid’s ‘top target’ at left-back this summer, followed by a claim that the Liverpool defender is ‘keen’ on a move to the LaLiga outfit.
The 31-year-old had said in recent days (via Sky Sports News) that he’d had ‘good discussions’ with Anfield chiefs as he enters the final year of his contract on Merseyside, adding that he’s ‘not sure’ what the future holds for him amid the probable incoming of Milos Kerkez from Bournemouth.
A further update this afternoon suggests that the Scotland captain could already be close to bringing the curtain down on his eight-year spell with the Reds.

Nazira Yusuf – Liverpool correspondent for Hayters TV – has indicated the transfer fee that Liverpool are due to bank from the increasingly probable exit of Robertson to the Spanish capital.
She posted on X: ‘Liverpool and Atlético Madrid are in talks over a deal for Andy Robertson. A fee in the region of £10m-£12m is expected to be agreed soon. The Scotland international, who’s in the final year of his contract, has given the green light to a move to Spain.’
While admittedly Robertson didn’t have his best season for Liverpool – he endured a few particular tough performances (Arsenal away and Fulham at home spring to mind) and saw his usually productive G/A output dip to just two assists – he’d still be an enormous loss to Arne Slot’s team if he were to leave for Atletico.
It had seemed as though he’d be an experienced mentor for Kerkez as the Hungarian settles into life at Anfield and the Scot gradually seen his game-time reduced while still being an integral leadership presence in the dressing room.
However, with the 31-year-old reportedly open to joining Diego Simeone’s side, perhaps he feels that he’d like to embark on a new adventure for his family and a new challenge for his career after the best part of a decade on Merseyside, where he’s grown exponentially since his £10m move from Hull City in 2017.
Pragmatically it’d appear to be astute business from Liverpool if they’re to recoup that fee (or even slightly more) for Robertson at his age, and club chiefs mightn’t want to stand in his way if he desires a move to Atletico, having served the Reds with such distinction across 342 appearances.
Still, in a summer which could see wholesale change to the squad at Anfield, the Scotland captain would bring a welcome sense of continuity, be a vital figure in terms of driving standards behind the scenes and offer a left-back option who remains a damn good footballer.
It’d be very hard to say goodbye to him if he is to leave for Spain in the near future.
