One Liverpool star is close to agreeing a mega deal as negotiations come to their final stage.

Richard Hughes has built a reputation as a master negotiator at Liverpool, not only helping the Reds make big money moves but also secure long-term commitments from some of their biggest stars.

Hughes has played a pivotal role in persuading players like Virgil van Dijk, Mohamed Salah, and Ryan Gravenberch to commit their futures to Liverpool over the last 12 months or so.

His approach has come with some degree of caution, negotiations for all of those contracts took their time, but ultimately Hughes was able to get the parties to agree terms that are favourable for everyone.

Convincing world-class talents to stay amid interest from the top clubs in Europe is no easy task, but Hughes has consistently demonstrated an uncanny ability to align individual ambitions with Liverpool’s vision.

That said, even Hughes’ considerable influence has its limits. Trent Alexander-Arnold’s departure was ultimately beyond his reach. Despite Hughes’ best efforts, Alexander-Arnold's personal ambition to join Real Madrid got in the way and there was nothing the club's sporting director could do.

Still, the successes of Hughes’ work cannot be overstated. By securing extensions for Van Dijk, Salah, and Gravenberch, he has ensured Liverpool maintains continuity at the highest level and sent a strong message about the club’s ambition and stability.

While not every battle can be won, Hughes’ contributions have quietly shaped the backbone of Arne Slot's squad.

Now he's approaching probably his most difficult task to date. He knows that even though Van Dijk is contracted to Liverpool until 2027, he's not going to stay at Anfield forever.

Ultimately, the Dutchman is getting on in years and Hughes has to rebuild Liverpool's defence.

The question is, who can possibly spearhead it? Is there anyone capable of replacing Van Dijk's influence and quality at the back?

A lot of names have been mentioned but the truth is that the best candidate for the role is someone who has been learning from the Dutchman and partnering him for many years now.

Ibrahima Konate has his critics, but he remains one of the best centre-backs in the Premier League, and with his experience but also relative youth at 26-years-old, he is absolutely the man to take on the role from Van Dijk as the club's defensive leader as Liverpool guide their transition trying to bring through Giovanni Leoni and Jeremy Jacquet.
