Liverpool last conducted a midfield refit back in 2023.

Jurgen Klopp and then-sporting director Jorg Schmadtke conducted deals which saw Alexis Mac Allister, Dominik Szoboszlai, Ryan Gravenberch and Wataru Endo all end up at Anfield.

Out went big-name midfielders such as Jordan Henderson, Fabinho, Naby Keita, Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain and James Milner.

Those transfers have been a spectacular success - with all four contributing to Liverpool’s trophy wins over the last couple of seasons including the 2024/25 Premier League title.

But there are signs that a new midfield transfer campaign will need to be conducted in the near future.

There is an alarming uncertainty building over Curtis Jones’ fate - with the homegrown star out of contract in 2027 and the club seemingly entertaining offers this January.

Endo too is expected to move on - and he is out of contract in 2027 also.

Liverpool want Adam Wharton

Szoboszlai and Gravenberch are due new contracts but the latest comments from the Hungarian captain do not appear to suggest a new deal is close.

Mac Allister meanwhile has blown hot and cold this season and a decent bid from Real Madrid could test Richard Hughes’ resolve.

Therefore a new midfielder should be added in the summer as a priority. And according to a new report in Football Insider the Premier League champions are going to step up their pursuit of the England midfielder Adam Wharton.

His club, Crystal Palace, are enduring a meltdown currently - having lost Marc Guehi to Manchester City and their league position diminishing seemingly by the week.

in a deal for the 21-year-old who is contracted at Selhurst Park until 2029.

Liverpool 'favourites' to land Wharton

“He is more likely to be available in the summer when Liverpool, Man United and more are expected to accelerate moves to bring him in,” the report reads.

“Crystal Palace are bracing for interest in Wharton and are expecting bids to arrive in the summer window.

“He will remain at Selhurst Park for at least another six months before inevitable bids arrive, with Liverpool and Man United the current favourites.”

Wharton joined the Eagles from Blackburn back in February 2024 - going on to establish himself as one of the best up-and-coming midfielders in the English game.

He went to Euro 2024 as part of England’s squad and is expected to be on board when Thomas Tuchel takes the Three Lions to North America for the FIFA World Cup next summer.

Wharton is an FA Cup and Community Shield winner from his time at Palace - looking all but certain to become the next big-name departure.

Liverpool will be hoping to get ahead of Manchester United for his signature with Michael Carrick looking for a successor to Casemiro.
