Manchester City may be taking on a Liverpool side without one of their most crucial starting line-up components, a new report has revealed.
The injury concern comes at a particularly testing time for Arne Slot’s side, who are balancing a heavy run of fixtures across both domestic and European competition, and the prospect of losing their first-choice goalkeeper has raised a level of alarm within the club.
Alisson has been central to the club’s successes in recent years under both Jurgen Klopp and Slot, producing decisive saves in high-pressure moments, showcasing an excellent ball-playing ability, and playing a vital role in Liverpool’s title challenges.
However, this week, the Brazil international sustained a hamstring problem during Liverpool’s 1-0 defeat to Galatasaray in the UEFA Champions League, pulling up after chasing back to stop Victor Osimhen.
The Brazilian was subsequently withdrawn from action in the 56th minute and replaced by back-up shot-stopper Giorgi Mamardashvili – a summer signing who now looks set for a prolonged run in the first team.
A day later, Alisson was omitted from the Brazil squad for their upcoming friendlies against South Korea and Japan, with the decision all but confirming the immediate seriousness of the injury and underlining the doubts surrounding his availability for the foreseeable matches.
According to the information of The Athletic’s David Ornstein and Gregg Evans, Alisson will likely be out of action for Liverpool until the November international break after sustaining a hamstring injury.
The 33-year-old, who had undertaken a scan on Thursday, could now miss several key fixtures in Arne Slot’s calendar, including upcoming games against the likes of Manchester United, Real Madrid, and Manchester City.
The report insists that Liverpool have not officially confirmed Alisson’s recovery timeframe, but the Anfield club expect a full prognosis in the next 24 to 48 hours.
For Manchester City, the development is one to monitor closely, with the two clubs remaining fierce Premier League rivals, with matches between them often decided by fine margins.
Alisson has, on several occasions, thwarted Manchester City’s prolific attacks, and his potential absence could therefore shift the balance when Pep Guardiola’s side meet Liverpool later this year.
At the same time, Manchester City themselves are no strangers to injury concerns, and have already sustained fitness scares around the likes of midfield lynchpin Rodri and longer-term issues with Mateo Kovacic, while the squad continues to adapt to changes in personnel.
Pep Guardiola will nevertheless recognise that Liverpool being forced to line up without Alisson could possibly present a major opportunity to apply early pressure in the title race.
