Liverpool take massive Andoni Iraola risk that no one is talking about

Liverpool have confirmed Andoni Iraola as their new head coach. There's a real risk here, though, and it's bigger than most think.

Andoni Iraola is the new head coach at Anfield. Liverpool moved to appoint the former Bournemouth boss and believe he's the one who can move this team up a level after a very disappointing campaign under Arne Slot.

Now, there's been a lot of positivity around the appointment and rightfully so. Iraola worked wonder with Bournemouth and did it with a fantastic style of play.

If things click, this will be a brilliant appointment that helps grow this team, moving it forward with the fans onside. That's all well worth aiming for.

However, history suggests Liverpool are taking a massive risk here. Appointments like this rarely work out and the Reds will hope to buck a trend with Iraola.

For starters, Liverpool do not have a good record when appointing coaches from within the Premier League. Both Brendan Rodgers and Roy Hodgson, the only two who fit the bill for the Reds, struggled.

And that's actually a wider issue in the Premier League. There aren't actually any coaches in the top flight who moved directly from one Premier League side to another, other than Iraola.

All the others took a break or were out of work when joining. But it's more notable at the top - Unai Emery is the only coach to have finished in the top 10 this season who previously coached a Premier League side.

Only two coaches have ever won the Premier League having previously coached in the league, too. Jose Mourinho in 2014/15 and Claudio Ranieri in 2015/16.

However, Mourinho returned to the same club, of course.

Iraola has also never delivered a league title of any sorts. Only one coach has ever won the Premier League without any experience of winning a league before: Mikel Arteta. Arsenal is Arteta's first managerial role, of course, and he did work as an assistant under Pep Guardiola before that.

It's also taken him seven years and over £1bn.

You can get more specific with the statistic, too. Only Arteta and Ranieri won the Premier League without having won a top-flight league title before. Extend that to 'in European leagues' and Manuel Pellegrini joins the group.

10 of the 13 managers (head coaches) to win a Premier League title had previously won a European top-flight title, then.

Liverpool are backing their new head coach to buck a trend, then. And in a big way.

Andoni Iraola: Situation Summary

Liverpool Appointment and Tenure

As of 8 June 2026, Andoni Iraola has officially begun his tenure as the new head coach of Liverpool FC. Following the sacking of Arne Slot on 30 May, the club moved quickly to secure the 43-year-old Basque manager, officially announcing his appointment on 4 June. Iraola has signed a two-year contract and was formally introduced at the AXA Training Centre, where he immediately began assessing the squad and preparing for the upcoming 2026/27 campaign.

Immediate Impact and Strategy

Iraola arrives at Anfield with a reputation for high-intensity, tactical football, built over three successful campaigns at AFC Bournemouth, which culminated in a historic sixth-place Premier League finish and UEFA Europa League qualification. Since his arrival, he has already begun implementing minor adjustments to the club’s pre-season planning. He is currently focused on managing the reintegration of players involved in the upcoming World Cup and working closely with sporting director Richard Hughes to identify necessary squad reinforcements to address the disappointment of the previous season's fifth-place finish.
