Reds’ defence comes in for yet more scrutiny after another challenging night

Ollie Watkins has revealed why he finds it so easy to score against Liverpool after hitting a brace in Aston Villa’s 4-2 defeat of the Reds on Friday.

Liverpool were far from their best at Villa Park as they missed an opportunity to confirm their place in next season’s Champions League.

They trailed 1-0 at half-time after Morgan Rogers’ impressive opener and equalised early in the second half before Watkins twice found the back of the net and John McGinn capped the occasion with a long-range pearler.

Watkins could have had more goals, though, as he missed two big chances in the match.

Good day at the office: Ollie Watkins

The four strikes Liverpool did concede mean they have now shipped 52 goals this season, already 11 more than last season’s tally with one more match still to play.

Watkins loves a goal against Liverpool, with eight goals against them in 12 career matches.

And he has now explained that Liverpool’s ‘disjointed’ back-four makes it easy for him to find space in behind.

He told Sky Sports: "Liverpool play a high line and don't play offside so they're disjointed at the back and feel like there's a lot of space for me to run into. No disrespect to them, the centre backs are world class but I spot space and opportunities. I like to run in behind.

"Just before the goal, I was disappointed because I went offside, they play such a high line. I shouldn't be offside in that position but to grab that goal a minute later, me and Morgan [Rogers] have a great connection.

"Buzzing Pau [Torres] missed that, I knew I wasn't offside. It's horrible when it goes to VAR you never know but you can't ask for anything more as a striker with a little tap in there."
