Liverpool travel to the Etihad Stadium today with their season firmly back on track.
After a disastrous four-game losing streak in the league, the champions have bounced back well. First, they beat Aston Villa. Then, they secured a massive 1-0 midweek win over Real Madrid. Consequently, this is a vital match for the Reds.
A win would see them leapfrog City in the table. Furthermore, they are aiming for a third consecutive league win over City, a feat they last achieved in 2016. Despite their recent revival, their away form remains a major problem. In fact, Liverpool have lost their last three Premier League away games.
Arne Slot’s injury problems are slowly easing. For instance, striker Alexander Isak has returned to first-team training after a four-match absence. However, Slot has cautioned that Isak is not yet fully match-sharp. This means Hugo Ekitike is expected to lead the line again.
The attack will be spearheaded by Mohamed Salah. As usual, he will be a key man. He holds the Premier League record for the most goal involvements against Manchester City (15).
However, the team is still without several key players. Goalkeeper Alisson Becker (hamstring) and defender Jeremie Frimpong (hamstring) are both out until after the international break. Therefore, Giorgi Mamardashvili will continue in goal. There is also a doubt over Andy Robertson. The left-back is being monitored for fatigue after starting the last three games. Finally, Giovanni Leoni remains a long-term absentee with an ACL injury.
Liverpool predicted XI: Mamardashvili; Bradley, Konate, Van Dijk, Kerkez; Gravenberch, Mac Allister; Salah, Szoboszlai, Wirtz; Ekitike
