Reds looking to close gap on top four

Liverpool take on Wolves on Saturday but will have to do it without Alexander Isak.

The Swede broke his leg while scoring the Reds’ opener against Tottenham last weekend as Arne Slot’s side ran out 2-1 victors in north London.

It is the latest setback in what has been a difficult start to life on Merseyside for the striker, which now leaves the in-form Hugo Ekitike to shoulder the goalscoring burden by himself.

That should be no problem for the Frenchman, who notched Liverpool’s second at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.

The Reds are looking to move into the top four of the Premier League with a win here, but they will need to do it without Mohamed Salah, who is on Africa Cup of Nations duty.

Cody Gakpo is “50-50” for a return here after a spell on the sidelines with a knock, while Conor Bradley also faces a late fitness test.

Florian Wirtz has been passed fit to play against Wolves, but Joe Gomez and Wataru Endo are longer-term absentees alongside Giovanni Leoni and Isak.

It therefore means that Alisson will start in goal, while the back four almost picks itself.

Virgil van Dijk and Ibrahima Konate will continue in the middle, while you would expect Jeremie Frimpong to get the nod at right-back should Bradley not be available.

Milos Kerkez was selected ahead of Andy Robertson at Spurs and should start again here.

In midfield, Alexis Mac Allister will partner Ryan Gravenberch, but there could be room for Curtis Jones with Dominik Szoboszlai suspended.

That might mean shifting Wirtz wide, with Salah also not available and Szoboszlai standing in for the Egyptian off the right in recent weeks.

Predicted Liverpool XI (4-2-3-1): Alisson; Frimpong, Konte, van Dijk, Kerkez; Gravenbech, Mac Allister; Wirtz, Jones, Gakpo; Ekitike

Doubts: Bradley, Gakpo

Unavailable: Salah
