Liverpool's next Jeremy Jacquet now looks clear after their latest target was named.
Liverpool are waiting for Jeremy Jacquet to arrive after his €60M signing from Rennes. The Reds believe they've got one of the best in the world with that deal - someone who'll become the best, anyway.
But their issues at centre-back aren't over. Ibrahima Konate could leave the club with the end of his contract, while Joe Gomez is expected to depart, too.
Virgil van Dijk will have just one year remaining on his own contract and Giovanni Leoni remains an unknown quantity after his serious knee injury. It's all sparked Liverpool back into the centre-back market.
And that means another Jacquet. Liverpool are, according to Africa Foot, considering a move for Abdelhamid Ait Boudlal.
He's remarkably similar to Jacquet in that he's a 20-year-old centre-back. Then it goes a step further than that - he's also at Rennes.
Liverpool feel the pair of them could be a future partnership, it seems, with the added bonus of them already knowing one another. Exactly how much Ait Boudlal would cost isn't known but the Reds may end up sending a lot more money to Rennes here.
The report suggests Liverpool are the most interested out of a group of English clubs. One to watch, certainly.
Ligue 1 Performance and Defensive Maturity
Abdelhamid Aït Boudlal has enjoyed a significant breakout season at Stade Rennais during the 2025–2026 campaign. As of 17 April 2026, the 20-year-old Moroccan centre-back has made 15 appearances in Ligue 1, starting 12 of them. He has demonstrated an unusual goalscoring instinct for a defender, netting two goals and providing one assist. Statistically, Aït Boudlal has been highly efficient, recording a 90% passing completion rate and averaging 3.5 clearances per game. His rise to the first team follows a successful transition from the Mohammed VI Football Academy and a brief loan spell at Amiens. On the international stage, he made his senior Morocco debut in November 2025 and was a key member of the squad that secured a silver medal at the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations.
Transfer Interest and Future Speculation
The teenage defender is currently one of the most sought-after young talents in Europe, with Rennes reportedly fighting to retain him. On 15 April 2026, reports emerged that the French club had moved to block any potential summer exit, valuing him at approximately €10 million and seeking to extend his current contract beyond 2028. Borussia Dortmund are said to be leading the chase, viewing him as a primary target to bolster their backline following the potential departure of Nico Schlotterbeck. However, Liverpool remain firmly in the hunt, having tracked his progress since his time with the Morocco U17s. Newcastle United, Ajax, and RB Leipzig are also monitoring his situation closely, though Dortmund’s reputation for developing young talent reportedly gives them a slight advantage in the race for his signature.
