We didn’t really expect it to be any different did we. As the January transfer window approaches, speculation around Liverpool’s activity has started to build. Yet, based on recent comments from key figures and ongoing transfer links, it’s difficult to see this being anything other than a subdued window for the Reds. With critical challenges in the squad and financial commitments, it seems Liverpool may choose to sit this one out, at least in terms of major signings. Whether we like it or not.
Manager Arne Slot’s recent comments have given fans a clear view of where Liverpool stand. When asked about potential squad reinforcements in January, Slot stated:
“We are having discussions every day, no matter if there is a window coming up or not. We always talk about the team, which players we like, which players are maybe not in the best place – fortunately we talk more about the ones that do well because almost all of them do really well. And yeah, it is a bit of a worry that three defenders are out at the moment. But the good thing is if the window opens, the defenders are back. I’ve said many times in the beginning of the season, I’m so, so happy with the squad [we have], and that’s not to say if there will be a chance in the market.”

Slot’s remarks reflect a sense of satisfaction with the current group of players and suggest that any changes in January will be minimal, if they occur at all. He also emphasised the club’s focus on the upcoming nine games, including key fixtures against Newcastle and Everton, rather than being distracted by transfer speculation.
Recent reports have linked Liverpool with a number of high-profile players, but all signs point to these being summer moves rather than January acquisitions. Journalist David Ornstein shed light on two major names:• Xavi Simons: “If Xavi Simons were to leave PSG in the summer, Liverpool would be seen as one of the most probable destinations for him.”• Martin Zubimendi: “Multiple well-placed sources believe Martin Zubimendi is now coming to terms with the idea of leaving Real Sociedad – and anticipate that happening next summer.”Liverpool’s history of carefully planned, strategic recruitment aligns with these reports. A splash in January seems unlikely, especially when the focus appears to be on long-term targets who can make an impact next season. Everyone being linked follows with summer.
Despite the apparent contentment with the squad, midfield remains a potential area of concern. Liverpool’s reliance on Ryan Gravenberch, while promising, exposes a lack of depth in certain situations. The club’s refusal to overpay for short-term fixes has long been a hallmark of its transfer strategy, but fans may argue that a new midfielder is crucial as the team chases trophies on multiple fronts.

On top of this, three major contract renewals—we anll know how important these anre too—are still under negotiation. This further complicates the likelihood of significant January spending. Meanwhile, there are murmurs about potential departures, with Wataru Endo and Joe Gomez reportedly open to moves. However, with Liverpool competing on all fronts, it’s hard to imagine the club sanctioning any significant outgoings.
While Liverpool’s January transfer windows have often been understated, this season feels particularly unlikely to bring major changes. With the squad getting healthier and the focus shifting toward critical matches, the Reds seem prepared to wait for summer to address long-term needs. As Arne Slot hinted, the upcoming games are of far greater importance than chasing unlikely deals in a notoriously tricky market.
With names like Xavi Simons and Martin Zubimendi on the radar for summer, fans may need to exercise patience once again. The word opportunistic will come up, but it’s just hard to see. It may well be an opportunity missed too.
