Liverpool have something of a surprise choice to replace Mo Salah. He'd cost a maximum of €80m.
Mohamed Salah will leave Liverpool at the end of the season in what's the biggest player departure since Steven Gerrard in 2015. The Egyptian has become synonymous with the Reds but it all ends this summer.
That will naturally be a shock to Liverpool. Salah has been the focus of their attack for years now - the one reliable outlet, even when times were difficult.
In fact, his inability to turn this current team into an attacking force (something we're not actually sure anyone could do) is one of the reasons Liverpool are willing to let him leave a year early. It's clear that someone else is going to have to deliver the goals.
Everyone is then looking to see who Liverpool sign as his replacement. Who can deliver the required goal output if Salah can't?
Well, the reality is that Salah's direct replacement won't be doing that. After all, he's the greatest goalscoring winger we've ever seen at Anfield and there simply isn't anyone in football who can step in and take over his direct role.
The goals will need to come elsewhere, which is why Liverpool are looking at a player like Sporting CP's Luis Suarez. The Colombian has 33 goals in all competitions this season but he's also a striker - the Reds may be looking to replace Salah's goals in a different way, without putting the pressure on a direct replacement.
Correio da Manha reports that Liverpool have now accelerated their interest in Suarez, who has a €80m release clause. One to watch this summer as the club seek to replace the goals of one of their greatest ever goalscorers.
As of 29 March 2026, Mohamed Salah has officially confirmed he will leave Liverpool at the end of the current season. Despite a contract extension signed in 2025 that was set to run until 2027, Salah and the club reached a mutual agreement to terminate the deal a year early. This allows the 33-year-old to depart as a free agent this summer after a legendary nine-year career at Anfield.
Injury and Performance
Salah is currently sidelined with a muscle injury sustained during the Champions League win over Galatasaray on 18 March. He missed the recent 2-1 defeat to Brighton and withdrew from the Egypt national team for the current international break. He is targeting a return for the FA Cup quarter-final against Manchester City on 4 April. In 34 appearances this season, he has recorded 10 goals and 9 assists.
Future Prospects
While Al-Ittihad remains the heavy favorite to sign him, San Diego FC owner Sir Mohamed Mansour has also expressed interest in bringing Salah to MLS. No final decision on his next club has been announced.
