In a recent interview with Sky Germany, Manuel Neuer revealed that he still hasn’t decided whether he wants to extend his contract with Bayern Munich, which expires at the end of the season.
“It’s really about the moment, about asking, okay, how is my body doing? What’s happening with my health? Does it make sense to continue? And I still need to delay this decision a little," said Neuer, who turns 40 years old in March.
Bayern and Germany legend Lothar Matthäus has now weighed in on the veteran goalkeeper’s future, stating that he fully expects Neuer to sign a new deal, provided he stays healthy.
“I’m convinced that, from his side, he’ll add another year at Bayern if he stays injury-free. And if his performances are right, that’s also in the club’s best interest,” Matthäus wrote in a column for Sky Germany.
There has been speculation that Neuer could come out of international retirement to play for Germany at next year’s World Cup.
However, Matthäus believes it’s “not the right moment” to discuss that, praising Oliver Baumann for his performances in goal for Die Nationalmannschaft and Hoffenheim.
“Oliver Baumann is having an outstanding season – not only with the national team, but also with Hoffenheim in the Bundesliga. He has earned and fought for his status as the DFB’s number one, and many who doubted him now have to concede they were wrong,” stated Matthäus.
