Luís Castro has been cleared by the STJD’s First Disciplinary Commission on Thursday after his sending off in Grêmio’s win over Coritiba last weekend, meaning he will only serve the automatic suspension. According to Globo.com, the coach had faced a ban of up to six matches.
As a result, he will not be on the touchline for Saturday’s game against Athletico at Arena da Baixada, with assistant Vitor Severino expected to take charge.
The charge fell under article 258, paragraph 2, of the Brazilian Sports Justice Code. It covers conduct contrary to discipline or sporting ethics, including disrespecting match officials or protesting their decisions in a disrespectful manner.
Castro was dismissed in the 49th minute of the second half after Nardoni’s goal was ruled out for offside. Referee Felipe Fernandes de Lima noted in his report that, after being cautioned for dissent, the coach repeatedly left his technical area and gestured provocatively.
The acquittal averts any extended suspension beyond the automatic punishment.
