Grêmio’s Gauchão meeting with São José-RS on Wednesday at 21:30 will be played behind closed doors, marking Luís Castro’s first game at the Arena. According to Globo.com, the sanction follows incidents during the Gre-Nal on 8 March last year, the first match of the state final.

The 2nd Disciplinary Commission of the TJD-RS initially punished Grêmio with the loss of two home games. Referee Ramon Abatti Abel’s report cited a bomb, paper reels and a bottle thrown onto the pitch by home supporters.

The club was then acquitted by the TJD Pleno after an appeal. The prosecutor’s office appealed again, and the STJD ordered the loss of one home match.

Grêmio asked to convert the penalty into an administrative fine, which could be channelled into basic food baskets, but the request was rejected. A separate bid to admit only women, children and people with disabilities was also refused.

As a result, the São José game will be staged at the Arena, a decision taken by TJD vice-president João Lucas Feldens Catto. Using the stadium without fans was the club’s third preference.
