Luis Suárez shines as Robert Lewandowski makes MLS debut | OneFootball

While the World Cup final dominated the headlines, two familiar faces made an immediate impact back in MLS. Luis Suárez starred for Inter Miami, while Antoine Griezmann marked his Orlando City debut with a goal.

Suárez once again let his football do the talking after missing Uruguay's disappointing World Cup campaign. Despite making himself available for selection after coming out of international retirement, the veteran striker was overlooked by Marcelo Bielsa. He had gone into the tournament break in excellent form, having scored a hat-trick in his final club appearance.

With Lionel Messi still unavailable after Argentina's run to the World Cup final, Suárez led Inter Miami to a dramatic 3-2 victory over Chicago Fire. The match also saw Robert Lewandowski make his MLS debut after joining Chicago. The Polish striker played 62 minutes but was unable to find the net, while Suárez scored twice before Preston Plambeck grabbed the late winner.

The game also marked a personal milestone for Suárez, who made his 100th appearance for Inter Miami since arriving from Grêmio. The move to the United States has helped extend the 39-year-old's career, with the less demanding MLS schedule allowing him to better manage the chronic knee problems that troubled him during his time in Brazil.

His numbers remain outstanding. Suárez has now scored 50 goals and registered 31 assists in 100 appearances for Inter Miami, averaging a goal every other game. This season, he has eight goals and one assist in 13 outings, while his finest individual campaign came in 2024 with 25 goals and 12 assists in 37 matches. The following year, he played a key role as Inter Miami lifted the first MLS Cup in the club's history.

Elsewhere, Antoine Griezmann also enjoyed a dream start to life in Major League Soccer. The former Atlético Madrid and Barcelona forward, who also missed the World Cup, scored on his Orlando City debut in a convincing 4-0 win over Western Conference leaders San Jose Earthquakes.

Griezmann played the full 90 minutes, although the biggest individual display came from former Palmeiras midfielder Eduard Atuesta, who produced three assists in the victory.

Inter Miami remain firmly in the playoff picture, while Orlando City still have work to do after a slow start to the campaign.
