Luis Vazquez breaks silence after joining Birmingham City | OneFootball

The Argentine striker penned a three-year contract at St. Andrew's earlier in the week

Birmingham City's 2026/27 season is just over a week away from commencing in a competitive sense, as Chris Davies' side travel to Swansea City for their EFL Cup first round tie.

After a mixed 2025/26 Championship season, the 41-year-old will be hoping that more consistency is shown as Blues look to challenge for a spot in the play-offs for the first time since 2012.

Last summer Davies was, once again, heavily backed in the transfer market by Knighthead to oversee the first of two major squad reshuffles, but this only resulted in a 10th-placed finish.

Pre-season activity has also been intriguing at St. Andrew's @ Knighthead Park, as a handful of transfer dealings have already been completed whilst Birmingham remain in search of a replacement for Craig Gardner, who left his position as director of football.

James Beadle recently returned for a second loan spell in B9 from Brighton and Hove Albion, whilst Jhon Solis saw his own loan switch from Girona FC turned permanent, and Dael Fry also moved to the West Midlands on a free transfer after leaving Middlesbrough.

However, plenty of excitement was generated when Luis Vazquez's move from Anderlecht was confirmed this week, and the Argentine has now broken his silence on the deal.

It was reported that Blues had parted with €3.5m (£3m) to secure Vazquez's services from the Belgian Pro League side, where he had previously plied his trade since 2023 after moving to Europe from Argentinian giants, Boca Juniors.

However, in the past three years, the 25-year-old scored just 18 times in 116 appearances across all competitions, whilst also spending the second half of 2025/26 on loan with Getafe in La Liga, where he netted three goals in 17 matches.

As such, Vazquez will be hoping for a much more settled and consistent period in the Second City in terms of performance levels and output, and taking to Instagram, already revealed his thoughts on the transfer.

"New goals, very excited for what’s to come," he said.

Vazquez is a player known for his physical attributes, which means a move to the Championship could help get the best out of him, which some Bluenoses firmly believe will happen.

"(August) Priske and Vazquez, something we have missed for a very long time. Viva la hoof ball," one Blues fan said.

Another pleased supporter added: And breathe… I think this is going to be brilliant business. Just a feeling. KRO."

"Finally we've got some good height and physicality through the team to go with the set piece coach. Klarer, Neumann, Fry, Solis, Priske and Vazquez. We definitely lacked that power last season," stated another pleased Bluenose.

However, not all reactions were overly positive, with one supporter replying: A striker nobody has heard of and the Anderlecht fans are happy he’s gone. Wow, promotion push or what."

One Anderlecht fan also claimed: "Best of luck with him. One of the worst strikers we had in Anderlecht. He fights for 90’, but that’s all."

Davies previously stated that not all of Blues' additions had to provide Championship experience over anything else, and the addition of Vazquez certainly falls into that category.

It is a deal which could hint at further changes to the club's attacking department also, with Priske hitting form in pre-season after his own high-profile switch in January, whilst club-record signing, Jay Stansfield, remains on the books despite constant transfer speculation.

It could also pave the way for Marvin Ducksch's exit, with the 32-year-old also heavily linked with a departure after scoring 11 goals in his first season whilst earning mixed reviews for his on-pitch contributions and off-pitch controversies.

However, Blues fans will also be hoping Vazquez can get off the mark sooner rather than later, having seen the struggles of Kyogo Furuhashi last term before his summer move to LA Galaxy.
