Luke O’Nien says Sunderland had already mapped out an exit route for him after his bruising debut, until a conversation with his father convinced him to stay and make it work. According to Sunderland Echo, he has since become one of the club’s most influential modern figures.
Signed from Wycombe Wanderers in 2018, O’Nien made his debut in the League One opener against Charlton Athletic at the Stadium of Light and was substituted at half-time after a difficult first 45 minutes.
He recalls deciding, with his dad, to keep searching for answers and to outwork adversity. His guiding principle, passed down from his father, is that hard graft cannot guarantee success but gives you your best shot, and it is an ethos he intends to instil in his children.
That attitude underpinned a career built on versatility. O’Nien has featured in midfield, at full-back and in central defence, remaining a constant across managers and eras and embracing the club’s demands.
He felt that outlook chimed with Sunderland’s working-class identity, noting how the Stadium of Light celebrates tackles. He added that, while he does not score many, he registered a Premier League assist, flicking on for Trai, and joked he has been learning from Brian Brobbey, quipping about number nine duties next year.
Eight years on, his story has taken in the League One slog, Wembley heartbreaks, promotion under Alex Neil and a play-off final triumph. With more than 300 appearances, he has helped lift Sunderland from League One to the Premier League and into Europe.
