Lutsharel Geertruida has confirmed he will not return to Sunderland this season after last term’s loan.

The player said in a social media post that he is proud of his time at the club and thanked supporters. Sunderland chose not to trigger their option to buy earlier this summer, continued talks with the RB Leipzig loanee, then signed free agent Thomas Meunier on a two-year deal, a move widely viewed as ending their interest.

Geertruida reflected on making his Premier League debut for Sunderland, called the campaign memorable, and wished everyone at the club the very best for the future.

The 26-year-old made 30 appearances in all competitions last season. Although he did not always start, he contributed to a strong finish that clinched Europa League qualification for next season.

With Meunier on board, Sunderland now turn to the new campaign, which includes Europa League football.
