Algerian international Riyad Mahrez's made headlines by disagreeing with Cristiano Ronaldo’s claim that the Saudi Pro League's already one of the top 5 leagues in the world.

Mahrez Responds to Ronaldo’s Bold Statement

In recent interview with L'Equipe, the Al Ahli winger responded directly to Ronaldo’s earlier remarks where the Portuguese icon predicted that Saudi Arabia’s league would soon rank among the global elite.

“I don’t agree with Cristiano Ronaldo that the Saudi league's currently in the top five worldwide. Those leagues are still ahead. But we’re not far behind. Our goal isn’t to get there overnight .. it’s a long term vision" Mahrez said.

Mahrez emphasized that players like him are pioneers in project still taking shape:

"We’re part of the early stages. We’re helping build the foundation. The league's clearly improving and I believe it will succeed"

Asked whether he misses Europe, Mahrez admitted:

"Sometimes I do. European football is at higher level and I love those challenges. But I’m fully committed here. I feel comfortable at Al Ahli and proud to be part of this development"
