Milan goalkeeper Mike Maignan has an important season ahead of him, one that has been described as ‘make or break’ by outlets in Italy, as he must decide whether to continue with the Rossoneri long-term, or start looking for his next club.

Where Maignan stands with Milan contract situation

The France international is under contract in San Siro until the summer of 2026, which means he is now into the final two years of his deal.

By next summer, there will be just one year remaining on the contract, and Milan hope to either have their ‘keeper signed up to a new deal by then, or have his replacement lined up.

La Gazzetta dello Sport describes it as a ‘make or break’ situation for Maignan, who already earns a reasonable living with the Rossoneri. He currently earns a reported €3.2m per season in wages, but will likely request an increase if he looks to extend his deal.

Saturday’s report suggests that Milan could be prepared to hand him a similar contract to the club’s current highest earner, Rafael Leao, who takes home an annual wage of around €5.5m

La Gazzetta suggest that it is down to Maignan, with his performances specifically, to show the Milan directors why he should be one of the club’s highest earners. He also needs to show them that he is capable of becoming one of the team’s permanent captains, and that he is able to lead his teammates through the tough moments.

If he can’t Milan may begin scouting around for a new stopper ahead of next summer, but La Gazzetta dello Sport predicts that Maignan is more likely to extend with Milan as things stand.
