Stuttgart travel to the MEWA Arena on Saturday to face Mainz in a bid to consolidate momentum for a top-four finish this season.
Mainz are yet to register a single Bundesliga victory since a 2-0 win over Augsburg in early February. A 4-0 loss to Borussia Dortmund was followed by two draws, each with Hamburg and Bayer Leverkusen, as this run of results has put them back in the relegation dogfight. Urs Fischer’s side will bank on their recent positive home record, where they have sealed three wins and two draws from their last five matches.
Die Nullfünfer will be without the likes of Robin Zentner, Maxim Dal and Andreas Hanche-Olsen for the game. Dominik Kohr, Stefan Posch and Kacper Potulski are set to become the three-man defence, while Stefan Bell has returned from his injury. Anthony Caci remains out with a hamstring issue.
Stuttgart solidified their chances of finishing in the top four of the Bundesliga standings following a brilliant 4-0 thrashing of relegation-fighting Wolfsburg. Deniz Undav, Jamie Leweling and Nikolas Nartey put their names on the scoresheet, taking Die Schwaben’s total points tally to 46 points in 4th place, two points clear of 5th-placed RB Leipzig.
Sebastian Hoeneß welcomed defenders Dan-Axel Zagadou and Julian Chabot to training, but both are set to be benched. Josha Vagnoman remains out with a thigh injury. Bilal El Khannouss is suspended for the clash, as Leweling, Undav and Chris Führich are set to support Ermedin Demirović upfront.
Mainz: Batz – Kohr, Posch, Potulski – Widmer, Kai Sano, Mwene – Nebel, Lee – Becker, P. Tietz.
Stuttgart: Nübel – Assignon, Jeltsch, Hendriks, Mittelstädt – Chema, Stiller – Leweling, Undav, Führich – Demirović.
