Mainz 05 took a significant step in the Bundesliga survival race with a 2-0 victory over Werder Bremen, capitalising on two moments of sharpness in a match where the hosts largely controlled possession but lacked the decisive touch.

The visitors needed just five minutes to take the lead. After a throw-in on the left flank, Phillipp Mwene managed to work space for a cross into the box. Paul Nebel attacked the delivery and powered a header into the net to give Mainz an early advantage.

The scene before the goal however, was quite odd: Werder winger Marco Grüll appeared momentarily distracted by a pigeon wandering across the pitch during the build-up, and Mainz were quick to exploit the lapse in concentration!

Bremen almost responded immediately. Only three minutes later, a corner found Leonardo Bittencourt in the penalty area, and the midfielder rose highest to meet it with a firm header. However, the ball crashed against the crossbar, denying the hosts a rapid equaliser.

Daniel Thioune’s side continued to push for a leveller throughout the first half and enjoyed the majority of possession. Another moment of controversy followed when Olivier Deman was lightly pushed by Stefan Posch inside the penalty area. The Belgian could have made a stronger appeal, but he quickly got back to his feet before the situation drew serious scrutiny.

Despite Bremen’s territorial advantage, Mainz held their lead going into the break. During the halftime interview with DAZN, injured Werder wing-back Mitchell Weiser singled out Bittencourt for praise, highlighting the midfielder’s influence and energy as Bremen searched for a way back into the match. Weiser himself is not cleared for a comeback just yet - Werder desperately miss him in the team.

Yet just as in the opening period, Mainz emerged from the dressing room the more alert side.

Six minutes after the restart, Urs Fischer’s team doubled their advantage: Sano won possession in midfield and immediately released Sheraldo Becker with a precise through ball. Becker drove forward before squaring into the box, where Jae-sung Lee slid in to guide the ball past Mio Backhaus and make it 2-0.

The goal underlined Mainz’s efficiency: while Bremen had seen more of the ball and created pressure, the visitors punished the decisive moments.

The subbed in youngster Salim Musah had Bremen's best chance in the second half: his shot from distance missed the goal only slightly.

In a match billed as a relegation six-pointer, Mainz’s clinical approach ultimately made the difference - leaving Bremen to reflect on missed chances and costly lapses in concentration.
