AC Milan have hit a significant roadblock in negotiations regarding the contract renewal of Rafael Leão.
According to Daniele Longo, the Rossoneri are now taking their time to reflect on the operation, as several internal and financial factors have brought the talks to a complete standstill.
Notably, a primary hurdle remains the distance between the two parties regarding salary. While Leão is pushing for a substantial pay rise to reflect his status in the squad, the Milan management is firm on maintaining his current terms of €5 million net per season plus €2 million in performance-related bonuses.
Furthermore, the club’s hierarchy has expressed growing dissatisfaction with the Portuguese international’s recent conduct off the pitch. The report indicates that Leão has been late to team breakfasts and has left training sessions earlier than scheduled, while his recent outburst during the defeat against Lazio has further soured the atmosphere.
Indeed, the situation marks a stark contrast to the start of the year, when negotiations appeared to be heading toward a positive conclusion.
Up until January, all signs pointed to a swift agreement, but the player’s perceived change in attitude has forced the club to pause. It is now understood that Max Allegri will have a decisive say in the matter, as the manager’s assessment of the winger’s discipline and tactical integration will dictate whether Milan proceed with the lucrative extension or consider other scenarios.
