After his heroics for Georgia at Euro 2024, Giorgi Mamardashvili signed for Liverpool in August before returning to Valencia on loan. Based on his performances last season, the shot-stopper was nominated for the Yashin Trophy, awarded annually by France Football to the best goalkeeper in world football, where he finished seventh. The £30 million signing is set to join Liverpool at the end of the current season.
The 23-year-old has been one of La Liga’s standout goalkeepers since arriving at Mestalla, playing a key role in Valencia’s survival in recent seasons. With Alisson firmly established as Liverpool’s No. 1 and widely regarded as one of the best goalkeepers in the world, it was understandable that Mamardashvili opted to continue as Valencia’s first-choice rather than competing with the Brazilian in Arne Slot’s debut season at Anfield.
However, Mamardashvili is now ready to challenge for the starting spot at Liverpool. “I’m going to Liverpool to fight to be number one. I’ll go, I’ll train, and I’ll give my best. Then the coach will decide. I’m not the one who decides who plays and who doesn’t,” he told Geo Team, as quoted by Relevo.
Alisson has enjoyed another stellar season at Liverpool and is on track to secure his second Premier League title. Despite transfer links, the 32-year-old is reportedly eager to stay. With two years left on his contract, this summer could be Liverpool’s last chance to cash in if they opt to move on. Should he leave, Alisson would prefer a move to a top European club over a switch to Saudi Arabia as per TEAMtalk.
Meanwhile, Mamardashvili and Valencia have struggled this season. Currently 16th in La Liga, the Georgian international has conceded 40 goals while keeping just five clean sheets. Statistically, he ranks among the league’s worst in goals conceded per match, save percentage, and goals prevented. If he is to stand any chance of displacing Alisson, he will need to improve his performance significantly.
