Manchester City are working to secure the long-term future of one of their most important players.

According to a major update from transfer expert Fabrizio Romano, the club is set to offer Real Madrid target Rodri a new contract that would keep him at the Etihad Stadium until June 2029.

The deal is designed to show the club’s full confidence in the player, who has been a key figure in Pep Guardiola’s squad for years.

The journalist mentions that Rodri’s new contract could also see him become the second-highest-paid player at the club, just behind Erling Haaland.

This comes after Kevin De Bruyne, previously second on the wage list, left City to join Napoli following the end of his contract.

At the moment, Rodri earns around €13.7 million per season, a figure that will rise significantly if he accepts the new deal.

The push to tie Rodri down to a new contract comes amid growing interest from Real Madrid.

The Spanish giants have been keeping a close eye on the 29-year-old for several months, and recent reports have once again linked him with a possible return to La Liga.

This is because Madrid are still looking for a world-class replacement in midfield following the retirement of Toni Kroos and the recent departure of Luka Modric.

Rodri, who joined Manchester City from Atletico de Madrid in 2019 for €70 million, has become central to Guardiola’s tactical setup.

City’s poor run of form last season, while he was sidelined with a knee injury, only highlighted his importance. Now fully fit, the club is determined not to risk losing him.

City’s board believe the new contract, which is nearly ready, will make a strong statement. The final decision, however, lies with Rodri. If he accepts, it would put an end to Real Madrid’s hopes of signing the midfielder anytime soon.
