Manchester City head to the Bernabeu tonight knowing that European nights rarely come bigger than this. Pep Guardiola’s side face Real Madrid in the first leg of their Champions League last 16 tie, and the Man City predicted lineup suggests a return to a more familiar structure after weekend rotation.
City arrive in Madrid after a 3-1 FA Cup win at Newcastle, though that result only partly reflects the team that Guardiola is expected to field against the Spanish champions.
With key players rested and others returning to training, the focus now shifts to how Guardiola assembles his strongest side for one of the defining fixtures of the season.
Erling Haaland is expected to start after being left out entirely of the squad that travelled to St James’ Park at the weekend. Guardiola explained that decision was deliberate rather than fitness related.

The Norwegian had only recently returned to action, completing 90 minutes against Nottingham Forest after missing the previous match against Leeds with a minor injury.
Guardiola preferred to manage his minutes carefully ahead of the Madrid encounter. Haaland trained fully during Tuesday’s open session before the team travelled to Spain.
He is now likely to lead the attack at the Bernabeu, replacing Omar Marmoush in the starting lineup.
Guardiola rotated heavily in defence during the FA Cup victory, but the Champions League stage typically demands experience and stability.
Ruben Dias and Marc Guehi are expected to return as the central defensive partnership after John Stones and Abdukodir Khusanov featured at Newcastle.

Guehi and Antoine Semenyo are now eligible to play in Europe following their January arrivals, having been unavailable at the end of the league phase.

Full back roles could also revert to familiar names. Rayan Ait Nouri is tipped to start at left back in place of Nathan Ake, while Matheus Nunes may continue on the right side of defence.
These adjustments reflect Guardiola’s preference for control in high level European fixtures.
The midfield remains central to how City intend to manage the game in Madrid.
Rodri is expected to return to anchor the system, with Bernardo Silva also likely to feature as Guardiola seeks composure in possession. Nico O’Reilly could retain his place after appearing at Newcastle, though Nico Gonzalez also remains an option.

City’s attacking structure may undergo greater changes. Rayan Cherki, Antoine Semenyo and Phil Foden are all candidates to start after being rotated in the FA Cup.
Goalkeeping selection will also revert to the usual hierarchy. Gianluigi Donnarumma is expected to return between the posts after James Trafford played against Newcastle.
Meanwhile, City continue to manage several injury concerns. Mateo Kovacic has resumed training following a long term ankle problem but is not yet ready to feature, while Josko Gvardiol remains unavailable as he recovers from a leg fracture.
