Both Pep Guardiola and Ruben Amorim desperate for victory in latest Manchester derby showdown

The headline fixture of the Premier League’s return following the first international break of the season sees the two rivals collide at a time when both could really use a positive result after disappointing respective starts to the new campaign.

Man City’s curious malaise from last term is not yet over it appears after they followed a thumping opening day win at Wolves with successive defeats by Tottenham and Brighton, while United needed a last-gasp Bruno Fernandes penalty to see off newly-promoted Burnley at Old Trafford last time out for their first win that came after defeat by Arsenal, draw at Fulham and Carabao Cup humiliation by fourth-tier Grimsby.

Ruben Amorim will be desperately hoping that his side may now finally begin to turn a corner and deliver another day to remember at the Etihad after last season’s dramatic late turnaround.

Date, kick-off time and venue

The Manchester derby is scheduled for a 4:30pm BST kick-off on Sunday September 14, 2025.

The match will take place at the Etihad Stadium.

Man City vs Manchester United team news

City were handed yet another new injury blow in midweek when Omar Marmoush was forced off early in Egypt’s latest World Cup qualifier against Burkina Faso with a knee issue that will rule him out of the derby.

John Stones withdrew from the England squad for matches against Andorra and Serbia with a muscle complaint, while summer signing Rayan Cherki remains sidelined.

Abdukodir Khusanov picked up a knock against Brighton, while the likes of Mateo Kovacic, Josko Gvardiol, Savinho, Phil Foden and Marcus Bettinelli have also been injured of late.

Erling Haaland needed stitches after a freak accident on international duty saw him hit in the face by the door of Norway’s team bus, but it did not stop him from scoring five goals in Tuesday’s 11-1 demolition of Moldova.

United have been sweating on the fitness of Matheus Cunha and Mason Mount, who were both forced off injured in the win over Burnley.

Lisandro Martinez remains a long-term absentee, while Diogo Dalot withdrew from Portugal duty last week with a muscle injury.

Amorim must decide whether to stick with Altay Bayindir in goal or immediately turn to new signing Senne Lammens in such a big fixture with former No1 Andre Onana off on loan to Turkish side Trabzonspor, while Pep Guardiola faces the same choice over James Trafford and high-profile arrival Gianluigi Donnarumma.

Neither of these teams approach the derby in any sort of form, sitting 13th and ninth respectively in the early Premier League table.

The uncomfortable truth for City is that their squad is simply not at the same sky-high level that we’d become accustomed to during their four consecutive title-winning seasons, with Marmoush’s unfortunate injury now only increasing their reliance on Haaland’s heroics even further.

However, they should still have too much for consistently underwhelming United, whose win over Burnley was massively unconvincing and likely to prove yet another false dawn in terms of any real progress made under Amorim, who is evidently feeling the pressure.

Man City to win, 3-1.

Head to head (h2h) history and results

After their loss on penalties in the Community Shield, United were unbeaten against City in the league last season despite their otherwise historically dreadful campaign, with a goalless draw at Old Trafford in April having followed their late 2-1 win at the Etihad four months earlier.
