Pep Guardiola reveals update on star striker after back issue that saw him miss Carabao Cup win

The prolific striker was taken off late against Arsenal last weekend and subsequently sat out Wednesday’s Carabao Cup win over Huddersfield due to a back issue that prevented him from training in the build-up to the game.

“He’s ready,” Guardiola said when asked for an update on the Norwegian international at his pre-Burnley press conference on Friday.

City have also received a boost from the return to fitness of Mateo Kovacic, who has not played at all so far this season due to an Achilles injury suffered at the end of last term that required surgery and forced him to sit out the Club World Cup.

“Kova maybe [available],” Guardiola said. “[It would help] a lot to have Kova back. It’s a long injury, surgery, but he is getting ready. He is not fully ready but step-by-step.”

City remain without summer signing Rayan Cherki, who was ruled out for up to eight weeks with a thigh injury suffered late last month.

Omar Marmoush continues to nurse a knee issue sustained on international duty with Egypt, while left-back Rayan Ait-Nouri is still dealing with an ankle complaint.

Abdukodir Khusanov is also still sidelined with the injury that forced him off early against Arsenal at the Emirates.

Matheus Nunes and Rico Lewis are both candidates to fill in for the Uzbekistan defender at right-back against Scott Parker’s newly-promoted Clarets, with the latter perhaps more likely to deputise after Nunes played 90 minutes in the Carabao Cup in midweek.

Predicted Man City XI: Donnarumma; Lewis, Dias, Gvardiol, O’Reilly; Rodri; Foden, Silva, Reijnders, Doku; Haaland

Injured: Cherki, Marmoush, Ait-Nouri, Khusanov

Doubt: Kovacic
