Iconic Youth Tradition Faces Collapse Amid Club’s Worst League Finish in Decades
Man United at Risk of Losing Historic Record Dating Back to 1937
Manchester United could be on the verge of ending one of the most iconic records in world football .. one that dates back to before World War II.
Since Oct 1937 United've fielded at least one youth academy player in every single match across all competitions .. a run that now stands at 4321 consecutive game.
But according to Spanish outlet Marca, this historic streak's in danger of collapsing this season especially after the club's worst Premier League finish in over 50 ye , ending 15th in the 2024 /25 table.
The only true academy presence expected in the squad's Kobbie Mainoo, the 20 year old midfield prodigy.
However any injury to him could break the record. The only other youth eligible player's 3rd choice keeper Tom Heaton who hasn't featured under new manager Ruben Amorim.
The report describes United’s situation starkly:
"The club’s identity of nurturing homegrown talent's slowly vanishing"
This youth policy helped United dominate English football for decades, most notably during the Sir Alex Ferguson era. During this legendary run, United won 18 of their 20 league titles and 3 Champions league crowns 1968 , 1999 , 2008.
As United continue rebuilding their 12 year wait for Premier League title grows longer. With fierce rivals like Man City, Arsenal, Liverpool and Chelsea strengthening, the task of reviving old glory's never looked more difficult.
