Manchester United Under-21 boss Adam Lawrence has made an exciting admission about youngster Shea Lacey.

Meteoric rise

Lacey has been making waves in the United Academy for a number of years now, due to his incredible talent and impact at youth level.

He has taken significant first-team strides this season. He made his senior debut under Ruben Amorim in December before the Portuguese coach was relieved of his duties as head coach and replaced by caretaker boss Michael Carrick.

Lacey made his senior bow as a six-minute second-half substitute in the 2-1 loss at Aston Villa, four days before Christmas.

The 18-year-old was then named on the bench for three first-team games but saw action in the two matches that Darren Fletcher took charge of. One of these was his impressive cameo in the 1-1 draw with Burnley. Lacey came agonisingly close to grabbing a late winner for United.

The forward received a red card in the FA Cup exit at the hands of Brighton and has not appeared for the club since. He sustained an injury following that incident, from which he has now fully recovered.

Lawrence spoke to the BBC and revealed that Lacey is now considered a first-team player.

Lacey revelation

Lawrence said, “Shea is quite a unique case. He’s always had an elite technical level. He can do things with the ball which are, without getting too carried away, genuinely first-team level.”

“But he’s been a later developer physically, so players like that need more time and patience.”

“Day-to-day Shea will train with the first team and basically follow their programme, and then be topped up with under-21 games when he needs to be playing.”

United Under-21s have an upcoming clash against Real Madrid in the Premier League International Cup on Tuesday.

Lawrence joked that he would need to try to persuade Carrick to let him have Lacey for the fixture, instead of taking the player to the training camp in Ireland.

“Ah, I’d have to try and sweet-talk Michael.”

“Shea has had one or two little niggles that have disrupted his rhythm a little bit but he’s definitely someone the club is really excited about. We do believe he is a player that can fully transition into the first team eventually.”

“Michael has been supportive. He understands the marquee games for the academy and the ones that he and the club feel are good to be involved in.”

Meanwhile, Carrick and his players return to action on 13 April when they host arch-rivals Leeds United at Old Trafford.
