Manchester United are pressing ahead in their pursuit of Elliot Anderson.

According to The Guardian, the club’s executives are optimistic they can beat Manchester City to the 23-year-old, who is valued at around £100m by Nottingham Forest.

City are seen as favourites for the England midfielder, who is expected to start their World Cup opener against Croatia on 17 June.

Forest have already rejected an initial £80m bid from City. United, however, believe Anderson can still be persuaded to choose Old Trafford.

The Red Devils have wasted little time elsewhere in midfield. They have agreed a €40.5m (£35m) deal for Atalanta’s Éderson, who is set to earn about £70,000 a week.

Anderson’s wages are higher, close to £100,000 a week at Forest, and he can expect a 50% rise at either Manchester club.

Sir Jim Ratcliffe wants to trim costs, yet the co-owner would meet those demands to land him.

Director of football Jason Wilcox is also tracking a second option. West Ham’s Mateus Fernandes, 21, is admired, though the Hammers’ reported £80m valuation may prove unrealistic. His wages, halved after relegation, would comfortably fit United’s budget.

Wilcox knows the player well, having signed him for Southampton in 2024. There is interest in Brighton’s Carlos Baleba, too, but the Seagulls expect the 22-year-old to stay.

The need for reinforcements stems partly from Casemiro’s exit, which has thinned Michael Carrick’s options.

The Brazilian, meanwhile, is expected to join Inter Miami. That move is not straightforward, however. LA Galaxy hold his MLS discovery rights, so Inter must agree compensation first.

The Florida club also lack a free designated-player slot to meet his wages. Officials are confident both hurdles can be cleared.

For now, the Anderson race is the headline. United believe they can win it; most signs still point to City.
