Manchester United have established contact with rival Premier League club Wolverhampton Wanderers to submit an opening bid for Matheus Cunha, David Ornstein has confirmed.

Cunha has consistently been mentioned as Ruben Amorim’s number one target for the number 10 position and over the weekend, there were positive developments on that front.

Journalist Ben Jacobs first relayed that United and Cunha had reached an agreement over personal terms. Jacobs explained that if everything goes well with Wolves, Cunha will put pen to paper on a five-year contract to become the latest addition to the ranks at Old Trafford.

It was stated that the Brazilian would officially start at United on July 1.

Fabrizio Romano then revealed that United had struck an agreement with all parties for Cunha’s transfer. Romano even sealed the move with his famous “here we go” catchphrase.

Now, Ornstein has come out with an update on the situation.

According to The Athletic journalist, United have approached Wolves to table their opening bid for Cunha, who has a £62.5million release clause.

Ornstein notes that United have asked to pay the 26-year-old’s release clause over five years rather than the required two.

However, Wolves want the contractual requirements to be met.

Ornstein adds, “Personal terms are already in place and there is an expectation on all sides that agreements will be finalised for the forward to join United.”

“United have prioritised a move for the 26-year-old Brazil international and he is keen on the switch after two-and-a-half seasons at Molineux.”

In the just-concluded 2024/25 season, Cunha notched an impressive 15 goals and six assists in 33 Premier League appearances. It was the most prolific campaign of his professional career.
