Manchester United have reportedly come up with a transformative plan that will see them solve Ruben Amorim’s biggest problem – the midfield.
After a summer transfer window in which United focused most of their efforts on bolstering the attacking department, attention is expected to shift to other areas of the pitch.
The middle of the park in particular is an area of concern, especially considering Casemiro is in the final year of his contract at the club.
During the summer, United explored a midfield signing. Brighton and Hove Albion’s Carlos Baleba was identified as the top target but a swoop for the Cameroonian was quickly abandoned after the Seagulls slapped a prohibitive price of more than £100m on him.
United are believed to still be interested in Baleba but he’s not the only on their radar. Other options on the list include Adam Wharton (Crystal Palace), Elliot Anderson (Nottingham Forest) and Angelo Stiller (Stuttgart), just to mention a few names.
According to ESPN, the Red Devils have an ambitious plan to save on up to £1m-a-week on wages and use these funds to power their midfield rebuild.
ESPN reveal, “Manchester United’s plan to strengthen their midfield options in next summer’s transfer window is being shaped by the prospect of shaving £1 million-a-week off the club’s wage bill and re-investing the savings on players capable of adding youth, energy and long-term value to the heart of Ruben Amorim’s team.”
“Expiring contracts of high earners Casemiro, Harry Maguire and Jadon Sancho, plus a confidence that Marcus Rashford’s £325,000-a-week salary will be removed by a permanent move to Barcelona or elsewhere has given United the opportunity make huge savings on player costs.”
“Sources have told ESPN that the financial boost of such savings will enable the club to compete for the signings required to complete the next phase of the squad rebuild under director of football Jason Wilcox and coach Amorim.”
Mark Ogden notes that United currently have no plans to snap up a midfielder in January. The club will pursue their targets in the summer.
There remains a chance that Maguire and Casemiro will stay at Old Trafford. United are open to keeping them but on reduced wages and incentivised terms.
Rashford, who is enjoying a brilliant loan spell in Spain with Barcelona, is likely to join the Catalan giants on a permanent basis. Meanwhile, United are expected to cut their losses with Sancho and let him leave as a free agent.
