Manchester United are in talks to sign Lecce left-back Patrick Dorgu according to The Athletic.
‘Discussions have begun’ over signing the Danish youngster as United seek to bolster their squad this month.
‘Nothing is yet agreed’ between the Red Devils and Lecce, but manager Ruben Amorim is ‘keen to add reinforcements’ to his squad during this transfer window.
The left wing-back position has been one of the flaws in Amorim’s 3-4-2-1 set-up. Diogo Dalot has mainly played there.
The Portuguese has struggled to cope with the demands of the position, being right-footed.
Tyrell Malacia and Luke Shaw are the natural left wing-backs in the squad. Malacia is yet to fully recover from his knee injury, while Shaw is still on the sidelines.
This has forced United to explore the market for a new left wing-back.
They have been linked with Bayern Munich’s Alphonso Davies but are unlikely to sign him. The Canadian is on the verge of signing a new deal with the Bavarians.
United have been credited with an interest in Paris Saint-Germain left-back Nuno Mendes. The Portuguese is also on the cusp of inking a new deal with PSG.
Bournemouth’s Milos Kerkez has been linked with the club, but they are unwilling to sell him this month.
The Red Devils are now targeting a move for Dorgu, who is one of the brightest young full-backs in European football.
He made his debut for Lecce last season and started most of the games throughout the campaign. He made 34 appearances, scoring two goals.
Dorgu has played predominantly as a right-winger this term, although he has featured at both full-back positions, left midfielder and left winger, demonstrating his versatility.
He has played as a left wing-back for club and country, making him suitable to play under Amorim.
United must resist competition from Napoli to sign the talented Danmark international.
