Manchester United have yet to raise the white flag despite the complications they’re facing in the quest to sign Viktor Gyokeres.

The Premier League giants have already acquired the services of Matheus Cunha from Wolves, but they’re determined to make a couple of additional attacking reinforcements, namely Bryan Mbeumo and a centre-forward.

The No.9 role has been a real issue for the Red Devils, as they have been struggling to find a breakthrough for any of their reported targets. After falling short in their attempts to sign Liam Delap, who declared for Chelsea, INEOS shifted their focus to Gyokeres who is coming off a sensational season at Sporting CP.

Gyokeres’ deal getting complicated due to Sporting’s rigid stance

Ruben Amorim’s old disciple bagged 54 goals in his 52 appearances this term, making him one of the most sought-after strikers on the market.

But while Man Utd were hoping to pounce on a reported gentleman’s agreement between the player and the Portuguese club, Sporting’s president has recently denied agreeing to sell the Swede for €60 million plus €10 million, insisting that he had only told the player he can leave for less than €100 million.

Gyokeres is reportedly furious with his current employers, while United find themselves in a tough spot, especially with Arsenal now emerging as the favourites to secure the deal thanks to their healthier finances.

According to Mais Futbol, the Gunners are expected to present Sporting with a second official bid after falling short in their initial attempt. The North Londoners initially offered a package worth €65 million, which was naturally rejected by the Lisbon-based giants.

Nevertheless, the same source insists that Man Utd are still lurking, announcing their willingness to offer €60m plus €10m, even though Sporting had explicitly deemed this amount insufficient.

At the moment, it remains to be seen what the outcome of the negotiations between Arsenal and Sporting will be.

If the Gunners fail to secure a deal, then perhaps United will stand a chance to strike an agreement on their own terms with the Portuguese backed into a corner.

In the meantime, the Reds are keeping an eye on other targets, as a report from Sky Sport Germany claims that the club has officially entered the race for Eintracht Frankfurt striker Hugo Ekitike.
