Manchester United’s summer transfer window delivered one of its most unexpected moments when Rasmus Hojlund departed for Napoli on deadline day. The striker, long considered a key part of United’s future, made the switch after the club brought in Benjamin Sesko.
His international team-mate Patrick Dorgu has now admitted he was taken aback by the decision. “That’s how it is in football,” said Dorgu, as quoted by the Daily Mail. “You never know when it’s your turn to move on. We knew that it would happen to Christian [Eriksen], but it was perhaps a bigger shock that Rasmus had to move on. I talked to him a lot during the process and could sense which way it was going.”
The words capture the surprise felt not only within Denmark’s squad but also across Old Trafford, where Hojlund had been seen as a long-term prospect.

Hojlund’s departure was structured as an initial loan, with Napoli committed to making the move permanent should they secure Champions League qualification. The deal, including loan fees, could reach a total of £43 million.
For Napoli, the move adds a dynamic forward who still has years of development ahead. For United, it signals a willingness to adapt their attacking options quickly, even if it meant parting with a player signed only last year.
The decision to sign Sesko as a replacement shifted the balance of United’s squad, effectively pushing Hojlund toward the exit. While financial factors played a part, the transfer also reflects the demand for immediate impact at Old Trafford.
Dorgu’s close ties with Hojlund and Christian Eriksen highlight the strong Danish presence in European football’s top leagues. His reflections also underline the human side of transfers, where friendships and team bonds are disrupted by business decisions.
“Hopefully, we will now see each other every time on the national team,” Dorgu added, showing both optimism and a hint of disappointment at no longer sharing a club connection with Hojlund.

The pair have grown through Denmark’s national system together, and their relationship will continue on international duty, but the absence of Hojlund in United colours remains a surprise for many fans.
For Manchester United, the move signals a bold shift. Sesko’s arrival gives the club a different profile in attack, but it also raises questions about whether United gave Hojlund enough time to develop. Supporters may reflect on whether the sale proves wise in the long run, particularly if Hojlund thrives in Italy.
Dorgu’s reaction mirrors the uncertainty surrounding United’s strategy. While change is inevitable, seeing a player with such potential depart so soon highlights the pressures facing both the club hierarchy and the players caught up in the process.
