The 25-year-old forward had made it clear that his priority this summer was a move to Old Trafford. Although Arsenal, Newcastle United and Tottenham Hotspur all expressed interest, Mbeumo remained firm in his preference to join United.

Brentford had rejected two earlier offers from United — one worth £55 million plus £7.5 million in add-ons and another of £45 million with £10 million in bonuses.

However, United returned with an improved bid that met Brentford’s valuation, especially after considering the £62.5 million spent to sign Matheus Cunha from Wolves.

Mbeumo is now expected to become the third signing under new manager Ruben Amorim, following the arrivals of Cunha and 18-year-old Paraguayan full-back Diego Leon from Cerro Porteno.

The Cameroon international is coming off a superb season in which he started all 38 Premier League matches, scoring 20 goals and providing eight assists to help Brentford to a top-half finish.

Since joining from Troyes in 2019, Mbeumo has played 242 matches for the Bees, registering 70 goals and 51 assists across all competitions. He was instrumental in Brentford’s promotion to the Premier League in 2021 and has been one of their standout players over the last four seasons.

Despite missing several months of the 2023–24 season due to ankle surgery, he returned strongly last term and was among the Premier League’s most consistent performers in the final third.

A versatile attacker who can operate across the front line, Mbeumo has been most effective on the right wing, where he is able to cut inside onto his stronger left foot. He also boasts a reliable penalty record, converting 11 of his 12 career attempts for Brentford.

United view Mbeumo as an ideal addition to Amorim’s high-energy attacking system, providing pace, width and goal-scoring threat from wide areas. His signing is seen as a key part of the club’s efforts to refresh their forward line following an underwhelming 2024–25 campaign.

For Brentford, the sale represents a club-record fee and brings an end to a highly successful five-year spell for the forward in west London.
