Man United urged to avoid former England manager in search for next head coach

Almost one week on from the sacking of Ruben Amorim, Manchester United still aren’t sure on what managerial direction to head next.

Interim boss Darren Fletcher had a frustrating start with a 2-2 draw against Burnley, who currently sit 19th in the Premier League table.

It remains to be seen whether the former midfielder will take over until the end of the season, whilst other names like Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has also been linked.

Whichever decision the Man United hierarchy make, it needs to be done quickly. The Red Devils currently find themselves down in seventh place and three points adrift from Liverpool in fourth.

Michael Owen, speaking to EPL Index, has named one candidate that Man United should be avoiding…

United warned over Southgate rumours

One of the names being linked is former England manager Gareth Southgate, but Owen believes that would be a step in the wrong direction.

“You can look at Southgate because he is a name that has been thrown around but it’s weird for him. He did a good job with England, but his club career goes back a long way to his Middlesbrough days,” said Owen.

“I think, in general, it wouldn’t be a popular appointment with the fans and that has to be taken into consideration,” continued Owen, “I don’t think he will appeal. He’s the most successful England manager for a long, long time but was the style of play attractive?”

“Manchester United demands a certain style of play and I think there would be a lot of scepticism around him,” said Owen.

“On the flip side, he is a very smart guy and he could absolutely be the guy that could run a club of that size and get them back on the straight and narrow,” continued Owen, “However, as I say, I think a lot of them fans wouldn’t approve.”
