Manchester United defender Mathjis de Ligt did not take part in the team’s open training session in front of the media ahead of the Europa League semi-final second leg.

The defender was forced off during Sunday’s 4-3 defeat to Brentford through injury and looks set to miss the return leg at Old Trafford.

Speaking about the defender’s injury after the game, boss Ruben Amorim said: “I don’t know so I’m really concerned [but] not about Thursday.

“We took off Luke Shaw at half-time to protect [him] and have players for Thursday, but I’m more concerned whether it is a small or big injury [for De Ligt] and thinking about next season.”

United lead 3-0 in the tie after their first-leg win at Athletic Club.

Casemiro gave his side the lead before Bruno Fernandes scored twice to ensure United take a big lead back to Old Trafford.

Noussair Mazraoui looks set to return to the squad for the second leg having been rested for the game against Brentford, and took part in the team’s training session before the game.

Youngster Ayden Heaven was seen doing individual work away from the rest of the team as he recovers from his injury which has seen him sidelined since March.

Christian Eriksen was not part of the training session but is believed to be available for the second-leg tie.

Midfielder Toby Collyer was also not part of the session and looks set to miss out again against Athletic Club through injury.

United have recently welcomed back Amad and Luke Shaw from injury in a boost for Amorim and United’s hopes of winning the Europa League.

Shaw started and played half of the game against Brentford, while Amad scored after coming off the bench late in the game.

United also remain without Joshua Zirkzee, Diogo Dalot and Lisandro Martinez with longer-term problems.
